How Much Should You Have Saved by Your Age?
Two questions, answered separately. The first is the one people ask. The second is the one that decides when you could actually stop working.
Your figures
Before tax. Used for the first question only.
Rent or mortgage, bills, food, everything. Used for the second question.
Savings, investments and pensions. Leave your home out of it.
Result
Am I where people my age usually are?
2.6 times your income. The guideline says your income once over by 30, and three times over by 40. Age 38 sits between the two.
You are about €27,000 short.
How much would let me stop working?
25 times what you spend in a year. This one ignores your salary completely, because what you need is set by what you spend.
You are about €660,000 short.
Why the two differ so much. The first is a rule of thumb built on average earners, and it assumes you keep working until 67. The second is the amount that could actually replace your income. If you only look at one, look at the second, and remember that spending less moves it down as well as moving you up it.
